Running

As I've got older, I've found that many things which previously one took for granted, like fitness for example, have to be worked for (though you can't do much about hair loss). I started running at the age of 40, and altogether I've run twelve full marathons - six London, four Glasgow, one Edinburgh and one Dublin. My best time was 3 hrs 10 mins in The Dublin Marathon in 1991, which is classed as a "good club runner". Unfortunately the degree of keen-ness has from time to time fluctuated (sometimes I'm a little less motivated than at others) and indeed over the past several years my running has pretty well come to an end. I'm a bit sorry that I never broke the three-hour barrier, but the amount of extra training you have to put in to knock off that final 10 minutes is quite daunting. For those who are interested, I'll include a 16 week marathon training schedule that is virtually guaranteed to get you past the finishing post in under three hours. Please note, however, that to even begin this schedule you would have to be very fit indeed, as the starting week involves running fifty-three miles - about what I did when I was at my very fittest and in full training! |
